What to pack when moving to the UK

What to pack when moving to the UK

Moving to the UK is exciting. You want to experience the thrill of being in a new country—and maybe a new continent.

However, for a newcomer, you will face some challenges if you don't pack the right things.

This is usually the case with a lot of people, including a friend of mine who moved to the UK a few years ago.

One of the most challenging parts of her big move was that she wasn't sure what to pack (and what not to).

But having stayed there a few years now and watched more new people come and go, she gave me a few useful tips.

I didn't just stop with her; I asked another friend of mine who moved to the UK about a year ago. Their responses turned out to be almost the same.

So, if you've recently just moved to the UK whether for work, school, or just anything, you're in the right place.

These are practical tips that will make your move to the UK smoother.

8 things to pack when m moving to the UK

Important documents

The first thing is your passport and Visa documents. If you're coming as a student, you must take your university documents along.

These university documents include your certificate of acceptance to show that the school has accepted for you to come.

You also need to go with your health records— like your tuberculosis test certificate which shows that you're tuberculosis-free.

The point is that you should go with every necessary document. So that you don't encounter hitches whether on your way to the UK or when you get there.

Appropriate clothing and accessories

Get warm clothes, waterproof jackets, umbrellas. If you don't want to carry too many things, you can get one or two of these.

However, if you're trying to save money over there, it's better to buy it and take it there.

You can also get formal and casual wear like polo— but make sure they are thick. Also make sure to carry enough African clothes— like your Ankara.

However, do not pack too much clothes. Find a way to balance taking enough clothes and not taking too much.

Food

You want to go with needed food items and spices, because there are limited African stores there.

However, it is very accessible and easy to get everything you need in many areas in the UK.

Pack some African foods—especially your favorites—so that you don't have to start buying much immediately when you arrive in the UK.

Gadgets

Go with your laptop, chargers, and any other necessary gadget in addition with your phone.

Do well to pack your gadgets safely and securely so that the strain of travelling won't damage them.

Gadgets cost money, and you don't want to start spending money on them as soon as you arrive in a new country.

Books

You don't need to take too many of these. Just go with the ones that you know you need so that you don't end up carrying too many things.

You may also have one or two favourite books. It's a good idea to go with them. They'll keep you some company.

Personal Items

If you're a lady, get your sanitary pads and medication if you are on any.

As a lady, it's good that you bring wigs. This is because making hair in the UK is quite very expensive.

When you're coming, try to make a long-lasting hairstyle so that you can have it on for a while when you get to the UK.

As a guy, it's also expensive to have your hair cut, but the only difference is that you don't need to carry wigs.

Lastly, don't forget to take your UK sim along.

Others (Miscellaneous)

Things like your bedsheets, pillow cases, etc., will help be useful over there.

Also come with pictures—  like pictures of your family members, friends, etc. This is because the UK can be boring when you are still trying to find your footing.

So, in order to keep memories of your loved ones, come with their pictures.

Don't rely on just soft copy pictures. Come with hard copies as well so that you can paste them on the board in your student apartment (if you're a student).

If you're not a student, you can paste it somewhere in your apartment.

Money

This is a no-brainer. Even though you're not necessarily “packing” this one, it's a very important part of your relocation.

Go with enough money so that you don't get stranded at any point.

Figuring out what to pack when moving to the UK and what not to can be a herculean task. However, if you follow this guide, you're on the right track.

Going with your important documents, appropriate clothing, food, gadgets, books, personal items, miscellaneous, and money is not optional.

Having all these things with you will make your traveling to and settling in the UK as smooth as possible.

Yes, you'll experience some uncontrollable things like culture shock, but with the right items in your bags, it's easier for you.
