What is the dialing code for Italy

Trying to call a loved one, business partner or friend in Italy?

In this guide, you'll find out about Italy's dialing code to help you place your international call. You'll learn about calling phone numbers in Italy and connecting with them without hitches.

A dialing code or a country code is the important code that you use to connect to international calls. Dialing codes are usually 1-3 digits and every country has a unique one.

To call a number out of your home country, you need to dial your home country's exit code, followed by the dialing code of the country of the number you want to call, then the local phone number.

It might look daunting but we promise it's not. We'll explain how to do this in the next few paragraphs and by the end of this guide, you'll be confidently dialing Italian numbers and connecting with ease.

Breakdown of the dialing process for international calls to Italy.

To learn how to make international calls to Italy, we'll first explain the different parts involved in dialing a phone number in Italy from another country.

Exit code

The exit code is a country's international access code. It's the code that allows you to dial international numbers from your home country.

Basically, without an exit code, your call will not go through. Exit codes are unique and every country has one. For instance, for the United States, it's 011 and for the United Kingdom, it's 00.

Dialing/country code.

A dialing code/country code is another unique code that every country has. It is the code that specifies the particular country you're calling.

Since we're on the subject, the dialing code for Italy is +39.

Area code.

An area code further narrows down to the region or city within a country which the local phone number is located in.

Like so many other countries, Italy has area codes for different regions in the country. In some cases, you'll need an area code and the country code to be able to  dial a specific phone number within Italy.

If you're trying to get in touch with someone in Rome, Italy, from the United Kingdom, here’s how to make that call:

  • For starters, dial the country's exit code, which is 00 for the United Kingdom.
  • Then, dial the dialing code for Italy which is +39.
  • Next, since you're calling a local number in Rome, look up the area code of Rome(which is 06) and dial it.
  • Lastly, dial the local phone number of the person you want to connect with. Let's imagine the local phone number is 1234 3456 5678.

If you follow the steps listed above, this is what you'll have at the end: 00 +39 06 1234 3456 5678.

In Italy, mobile phone numbers and landline phone numbers don't start with the same digits. The dialing process does not differ, however. For mobile numbers, you just need the exit code, dialing code and the phone number.

In some cases, you can use the “+” sign in your keypad instead of an exit code. However, you should always check carefully to ensure that you're dialing the right numbers.

Voice over internet protocol(VoIP) as an alternative way to make international calls.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), allows you to make voice calls over the internet instead using a regular phone.

You can use VoIP apps like WhatsApp and other Messenger apps over the internet. They are usually free and only need a good internet connection.

Another unpopular option is using calling cards to first dial an access number, then dial the Italian number you want to connect with. Calling cards are a great option if you don't have internet access.

The unique dialing code for Italy is +39. To make international calls to Italy from your country, you need to dial:

  • Your country's exit code
  • Italy's dialing code
  • The area code of the region of Italy you're trying to connect with.(Ignore this step if you're calling a mobile number)
  • The local phone number.

For an accurate list of the area codes for various Italian cities, you can do an online search or contact your phone carrier/mobile network company.
